People who eat breakfast every day feel better when they wake up, a nationwide survey in Japan by snack food maker Calbee Inc. has revealed.

The online survey, conducted on Feb. 16-18, targeted 1,880 men and women aged 18-69. A total of 57.4% of those who said they eat breakfast every day answered that they recently had no physical problems upon waking, higher than the 50.1% of those who said they didn’t regularly eat in the morning.

Daily breakfast eaters accounted for 70.8% of all respondents. However, the percentage of those who had a morning meal every day varied from 57.6% of those living alone to 74.1% of those living with others. Tokyo-based Calbee stated, “It is important to note that people who start living alone tend to stop eating breakfast, coinciding with their new life starting in spring.”

With multiple responses possible, the most frequently eaten breakfast food in eastern Japan was white rice or rice porridge, accounting for 48.2%, while in western Japan bread was the top choice, consumed by 52.3%.
