Donald To Quack Soon On Sanctions After Indo Russian S-400 Deal
Donald Trump has quacked that India “will soon find out” about his decision on the punitive CAATSA sanctions.
SO no wonder there was vibration on Richter Scale off Andaman Coast soon after. India just went ahead and signed a Rs 50000 Crores deal to purchase the S-400 air defence missile system from Russia.
This leaves no option for USA Under the Countering America, Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, hastily amended early this year, but to react. Under the amended act Donald has to now decide as to how get out of the tricky situation.
Either issue a waiver to the American Administration so that they don’t have to do anything or issue sanctions on India and then wait for Indian retaliatory sanctions.
The missile deal was signed last week to purchase S-400 Triumf air defence system from Moscow. The mega deal was sealed in New Delhi during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Americans were so sure that India will not go through the deal that Trump made no Plan B, but after about the agreement between India and Russia, Donald Trump while interacting with reporters in the Oval Office of the White House, said, “India will find out.
Aren’t they?” “India is going to find out; he reiterated in response to India specific question. Asked when, he said, “You will see.
Sooner than you think.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also in the room when Donald Trump answered the question on CAATSA sanctions.
Mr Pompeo was scheduled to meet the president later. Mr Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis had earlier argued that a Waiver be issued to save face.
Last week. the White House had said that the US presidential waiver on weapons deal with sanctions-hit Russia is intended to “wean” countries like India off the Russian equipment. Imagine White House thinks that India is a baby ?
“The waiver is narrow, intended to wean countries off Russian equipment and allow for things such as spare parts for previously-purchased equipment: a White House National Security Council Spokesperson had said after the conclusion of the S-400 contract. How Gracious!!
The US embassy spokesperson in New Delhi had said that the CAATSA was aimed at Moscow and not intended to damage the military capabilities of its “allies and partners.”
