Republicans control of US Congress may weaken West’s support to Ukraine
It is reported that the United States’ decreased activity on this track is likely to scale back Europe’s assistance to Kiev
Now that the Republicans have gained control of the US House of Representatives, Western support for Ukraine may visibly decline, China’s Global Times reported on Friday.
“Republican control over Congress’ lower house will influence the United States’ foreign policy,” the editorial reads. “Washington will not stop helping Kiev, but amid stronger resistance from the Republican Party, America’s support to Ukraine may drop dramatically.”
According to the newspaper, the United States’ decreased activity on this track is likely to scale back Europe’s assistance to Kiev. “When Washington weakens support to Ukraine, its allies may begin to doubt whether they should continue to act as they did,” it says.
Taking into account these changes, the probability of an aggravation of the situation in the European Union is likely to go up, the newspaper says, adding that the United States is suffering from the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis which they themselves provoked.
“The United States is seeking to create problems for the entire world in a bid to ensure its global hegemony,” the authors of the article say. “But amid global integration, it will be difficult for Washington to spare itself [from the consequences of its own policy].”
Earlier, the House Republicans came out with a legislative initiative to investigate the funds the US government is allocating to Ukraine. They say that the American taxpayers deserve to know why their money is going to a country that doesn’t even belong to NATO.
