Indian submarine ’Karanj’ arrives in Colombo

INS Karanj – a submarine of the Indian Navy arrived at the port of Colombo on 03 February on a formal visit. The visiting submarine was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in precision of naval traditions.
 
INS Karanj is a 67.5m long submarine with a crew of 53 and is commanded by Commander Arunabh.
 
While the submarine is in the island, Sri Lanka Navy personnel will participate in a submarine awareness programme, and the submarine crew is set to explore some of the country’s tourist attractions. The INS ‘Karanj’ will depart Sri Lanka on05 Feb.

Amid the movement of a Chinese spy vessel that Beijing terms a scientific research vessel, toward Male, the Indian Navy has no choice but to keep a close eye on the movements of all kinds of ships in the Indian Ocean, especially in the Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Sea and Seas off Maldives and Sri Lanka. While closely monitoring the Indian Ocean region, the Indian Navy recently sent its submarine to Sri Lanka on an official visit.

The Indian Navy has also deployed its Marcos Commandos in the Arabian Sea to counter pirates and any attack on cargo ships.

After Maldives pro-Chinese leader Mohamed Muizzu took over as the President of the archipelago, Maldives has asked India to replace its soldiers present in the island nation with civilians and both nations have agreed to complete the replacement process by May 10.

While Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its soldiers, he has allowed a Chinese vessel to dock in Male. Amid this, the Indian Navy has increased its presence in the Indian Ocean region including Lakshadweep to counter any threat emanating from China actions.
