China’s new aircraft carrier, the Fujian, starts its first sea trial in Shanghai on May 1, 2024
China’s third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, set out for its first sea trials Wednesday morning, the official Xinhua News Agency said, with the tests expected to pave the way for its entry into service as soon as possible later this year.
The ship, which was launched in June 2022, left Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard at around 8 a.m. The sea trials will primarily test the reliability and stability of the aircraft carrier’s propulsion and electrical systems, the state-run news agency said.
Xinhua also said the Fujian has completed its mooring trials, outfitting work and equipment adjustments. It has met the technical requirements for sea trials.
The Fujian is the second aircraft carrier in the world to feature an electromagnetic catapult system, after the U.S. military aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, and is China’s largest warship to date with a displacement of more than 80,000 tons.
The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration has issued a navigation warning, indicating that military activities will take place from Wednesday to May 9.
India which has been operating aircraft carriers since 1961 has presently two operation aircraft carriers with one of them being an indigenous one. However now India needs to lay the keels for a sister ship to INS VIKARANT on priority. It needs to be done within months. Also as soon as this ship is launched , then the keel for a 80000 ton nuclear powered aircraft carrier needs to be laid too.
