Shri Jaishankar expects US to adopt more isolationist foreign policy

According to Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, “it’s important to look at the US more nationally than purely in terms of the ideology of the administration of the day”

The US may focus more on its domestic affairs in the future, regardless of who wins the November 5 presidential election, said Shri Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a visit to Australia.

“Probably starting from [President Barack] Obama, the US has become much more cautious about its global commitments,” he noted, pointing to the US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden.

The Foreign Minister of India added that US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump “may be more articulate and expressive in that regard.”

According to Jaishankar, “it’s important to look at the US more nationally than purely in terms of the ideology of the administration of the day.”

“If we are truly analyzing them, I think we have to prepare for a world where actually the kind of dominance and generosity which the US had in the early days may not continue,” he concluded, as cited by the Economic Times newspaper.
