According to the latest News Delhi Metro to be world’s 1st 100% solar-powered metro network! Gets 27MW power from Rewa project for trains

The corporation now aims to run all its operations on solar power by the year 2021. With this initiative, DMRC expects to save over Rs 41 crore.

Delhi Metro goes green! The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is eyeing to be the world’s first 100 per cent green energy rail network. Recently, DMRC got 27 MW power from the Madhya Pradesh-based Rewa Solar Power Project. Interestingly, this is the first time when the DMRC received power from an “offsite source”.

A senior DMRC official was quoted in a PTI report saying that till now, the solar power generated by roof-top solar plants installed in DMRC premises was used for auxiliary requirements such as air conditioning and lighting of metro stations, depots. But, now solar power coming from Rewa Solar Power Project would also be used to run the metro trains.

Currently, DMRC uses solar power for almost 60 per cent of its electricity needs. The corporation now aims to run all its operations on solar power by the year 2021. With this initiative, DMRC expects to save over Rs 41 crore.

According to a statement issued by DMRC, the corporation has received 27 MW power from the project based in Madhya Pradesh and the solar power will gradually increase to 99 MW. DMRC also said that the solar power received from Rewa will be used for Delhi Metro’s operational and auxiliary requirements.

According to the DMRC statement, in a calendar year, on an average, around 345 million units (MU) of power will be received from Rewa. In the year 2018-19, Delhi Metro consumed about 1092 MU of power for its operations.

Other than the power received from Rewa, nearly 28 MW of power is generated by DMRC through a number of roof-top solar power projects which have been installed at metro stations, depots, and residential colonies.

The Rewa Ultra Mega Solar power plant has a total capacity of 750 MW and is one of the largest single-site solar power plants in the world.

The DMRC official also informed that to mark the beginning of this new initiative, Managing Director of DMRC, Mangu Singh on Thursday travelled in a metro train powered by solar energy from JLN Stadium station to Central Secretariat station.

Also, other officials including Chairperson, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar, Manu Srivastava as well as Director General, International Solar Alliance, Upendra Tripathi accompanied him.
