CBSE Board Exams to be Held With 30% Syllabus Cut, 33% Internal Choice, Says Education Minister Pokhriyal

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, on Tuesday interacted with teachers across the country which began at 4 PM. The minister is also expected to make the important announcement regarding the schedule of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations for Classes 10 and 12 proposed to be held next year through the paper-pen mode. As per reports, teachers of various schools are likely to seek clarity on the dates of the CBSE Board examination during the webinar.
As part of the central government initiative to conduct examinations on time amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister has planned a three-way dialogue with the students, parents and teachers across the country. The Minister will also interact with the stakeholders through webinars on three days. CBSE officials have clarified that there is no proposal to hold the board exams online.
Earlier in the day, the minister took to Twitter and wrote, ” ‘ :’ My dear #Teachers, I will be going live on Dec 22 at 4 pm to talk to you about the upcoming board #exams. Do tune in & share your concerns with me. #EducationMinisterGoesLive.”
Many teachers have shared their queries including ones on the upcoming CBSE and state board syllabus, exam patterns and exam dates. While several teachers have also asked to cancel the 2021 board exams, some others have opined to conduct exams online.
On December 10, the education minister had interacted with students and answered questions about various concerns regarding the conduct of upcoming board exams. No final decision has been taken yet on the dates for board exams. The minister further said during the interaction that consultations with stakeholders are in progress for deciding the dates for board examinations for classes 10 and 12 and they will be announced soon based on the feedback from the stakeholders.

5:15 PM: The CBSE board exams will be held on a reduced syllabus. 30% of the total syllabus has been cut and some states have also announced a similar move while others are expected to do the same. There will also be 33% internal choices in the exam, said Pokhiryal.
5:10 PM: The CBSE board exams has been postponed, will be held post February. Speaking on this, the education minister said, “Cancelling exams and promoting students without exam will result in putting a stamp on these students, following which they might face trouble in getting jobs and admissions at higher education level in future. We do not want that for our students. Thus, cancellation will not happen. Thus, board exams will be held but postponed. The class 10 and 12 board exams will not be held in Jan-Feb. But when exactly will the exams will be held will be decided after February when situation is favourable, said Pokhriyal.
5:00 PM: When a teacher asked if board examinations can be postponed for three months, the minister said, “Earlier also we have conducted the examination amid this pandemic. We have conducted JEE, NEET exams during the COVID-19 pandemic and we are the only country to conduct the exams in such a crisis.
4: 55 PM: Recently, we have introduced more internal options in the JEE Main examination. Of the 90 questions in each section, students will have to answer only 75 questions. Students whose boards have reduced syllabus by 30 per cent will have lesser choices but they will not be at any loss. Thus students can prepare as per their own boards, said Pokhriyal.
4: 45 PM: The Education Minister also spoke regarding mental health of students during the pandemic. He said how the ministry had organised various activities like Fit India Movement, online yoga sessions, online programs, and various other activities to keep mental health of students balanced.
4:40 PM: Amid the pandemic, we had to shift the whole education system to online mode overnight and it was possible only with the help of teachers. We also launched ‘One Class One Channel’ via DTH service through which lakhs of students were benefitted. Teachers worked day and night to teach their students online. Due to lack of access to the internet, teachers in some remote areas are teaching through loudspeakers. We have also partnered with All India Radio to broadcast educational programmes on radio. We have covered a lot and are working in this regard. I believe we will soon get a solution to these infrastructural issues, said Pokhriyal.
4:35 PM: Training services for teachers in online education is on, several platforms has also been launched including ‘Nishtha’. CBSE has trained 4.80 lakh teachers in online education teaching, KVS trained over 15 thousand and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya trained over nine thousand teachers, said the minister during his live interaction with teachers. Online evaluation training was also provided by NVS, the minister shared.
4: 30 PM: From Class 6 onwards, a vocational training programme with an internship will be introduced. The minister said, “We aim to implement vocational education for students in class 6 onwards in middle schools. This has been introduced under the NEP 2020.
4: 28 PM: The Education Minister said that a teacher is a key between the drafting of the national education policy (NEP) and its implementation on the ground. He said that implementation of a policy is tough but must task.
4: 27 PM: I am glad to say that we are the first country in the world which is introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the school level syllabus, said the minister.
4: 25 PM: Addressing to queries of the teachers, Ramesh Pokhriyal said, “I wanted to discuss the CBSE and state board examinations with you all to ensure that the final decision is in favour of students and teachers. Hence, I invited you to share your suggestions and feedback with me.”
4: 20 PM: The first query was of a teacher from Madhya Pradesh who said that he wants to include professional papers from Class 9, in the school”, To this, the Education Minister said, “Considering your inputs, we have introduced technical education from Class 6 onwards along with internship to ensure practical training than just theoretical studies.”
4:15 PM: The teachers of our country are no less than COVID warriors, they did not waste the academic year during the pandemic. Even though, many countries have canceled one entire academic year but our teachers continued to work hard and did not allow any candidate to waste their academic year. Praising teachers for their effort and determination during this tough time, the minister also credited the teachers for successfully conducting of the entrance examinations in the country including JEE, NEET amid the pandemic.

3: 30 PM: Through a video message, the Education Minister invited suggestions from teachers, academicians, and other stakeholders on how to conduct the board exams during the pandemic. He said that he would discuss their suggestions during the live discussion to begin at 4 pm.
