Countering China more important for USA

In this regard, Pete Hegseth advocated that the US and Europe arrange a “division of labor”
The United States can no longer focus on Europe’s security and intends to switch to containing China in the Asia-Pacific region, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said in Brussels at a meeting of the Western contact group coordinating arms deliveries to Ukraine.
“We’re also here today to directly and unambiguously express that stark strategic realities prevent the US from being primarily focused on the security of Europe,” the American defence Minister said .
“The United States faces consequential threats to our homeland. We must and we are focusing on the security of our own borders.
We also face a peer competitor in Communist China with the capability and intent to threaten our homeland and core national interests in the Indo-Pacific [region],” Hegseth said.
According to him, “the US is prioritizing deterring war with China in the Pacific [region], recognizing the reality of scarcity and making the resourcing trade offs to ensure deterrence does not fail.
“In this regard, the American Minister advocated that the US and Europe arrange a “division of labour.”
“Deterrence cannot fail for all of our sakes, as the United States prioritizes its attention to these threats, European allies must lead from the front,” Hegseth emphasized.
