That Maddur Vada was bout in a Railway Canteen?
“In Metre Gauge era, trains used to stop at Maddur for 30 minutes , for watering”. Back in the year 1917, Late Shri Ramachandra Budhya was running Vegetarian Refreshment Room (VRR) at Maddur Railway Station, nearly 80 Km from Bengaluru. This is where he catered to the idli, vada and pakoda cravings of many train passengers travelling between Mysore and Bengaluru.
In April particular that year on day, Shri Budya was running a bit late frying the usual pakodas . the incoming train passengers. In a jiffy, he threw ingredients together to prepare, something for the passengers to munch when they arrived. Little did he know that he had created, a masterpiece.
That food item continues to be one of the most iconic delicacies is Karnataka, even after 103 years-Maddur Vada. It took the name of the town it was born in. Maddur. From 1917 to 1987, Maddur Vada by the original chef and his kin was available only in Maddur Railway station
