India Elected To UNESCO World Heritage Committee
India has been elected as a member of the United Nations World Heritage Committee for the term of four years, starting from the current year. The 23rd General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention in a meeting from 24 to 26 November 2021 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, elected 12 new members to the Committee.
193 States Parties attended the World Heritage Convention, under the chairmanship of H.E. Mr Tebogo Seokolo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Permanent Delegate of South Africa to UNESCO.
The new members are Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Qatar, Rwanda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Zambia.
The current composition of the World Heritage Committee is therefore as follows:
Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Zambia
The Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties, the official website of the UNESCO said.
“Good day for Indian diplomacy. Elected to the @UNESCO World Heritage Committee for 2021-25,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in his tweet, EAM also informed that Interpol on Thursday elected India’s candidate Praveen Sinha who is Special Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as Delegate for Asia in its Executive Committee.
