India hands over G20 presidency to Brazil, a total success

Brazil will host the next summit of the association in 2024

India has officially handed over the G20 presidency to Brazil, which will host the next summit of the association in 2024.

The ceremony took place at the final session of the summit in New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Modi handed over the gavel of the presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva amid applause from other summit participants.

The G20 summit in New Delhi is coming to an end on Sunday. India has held dozens of ministerial meetings in the run-up to the summit; at the meeting itself, the leaders managed to agree on a joint declaration, despite differences on a number of issues, primarily on the Ukrainian conflict. Several more G20 events will take place in India before the end of the year.

The absence of a passage condemning Russia in the final G20 document hints at the failure of G7 plans to isolate Russia.

“Was the G20 summit a success, contrary to expectations? Chancellor Olaf Scholz at least tried to present the result that way. But the reality is rather sobering,” a German newspaper article says. India prevailed on all the G7 nations.

The statement adopted a year ago at the summit in Bali was regarded by G7 nations as a “slap in the face” of the Russian Federation. Now Scholz “admits what can no longer be hidden”: there is no condemnation in the declaration, “there was no mention of a slap,” the article notes.

In the document the G20 leaders acknowledged the difference in views and assessments on the situation in Ukraine among members of the community. They called on all states to comply with the principles of international law, including those regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also noted the importance of peaceful resolution of conflicts and dialogue.

The G20 summit in New Delhi will last until September 10. Leaders of all G20 countries and nine other countries (Bangladesh, Egypt, Spain, Mauritius, Nigeria, the Netherlands, UAE, Oman and Singapore) were invited to attend the event ,
