India tells G7 to postpone ban on Russian diamonds import

India has told the Group of Seven (G7) countries to postpone introduction of the ban on Russian diamonds because the origin tracing rules are not clear, Reuters news agency said, citing sources.
“The timeline to start restrictions on indirect imports from Russia in three-four months is impractical, as the rules on how the origin for a gem will be traced are not clear,” one of the sources said, cited by Reuters.
India also expressed objections to a new mechanism of raw diamond checking and certification. It may require the exchange of data about Indian plants and some of them can be confidential, another source told Reuters.
The G7 countries said earlier they would ban Russian diamonds from January 1, 2024.
