India to boost seafood supplies to Russia

India shipped seafood, mainly frozen shrimps, worth $7.4 bln in the 2024-2025 financial year

India is eyeing Russia as an alternative market for seafood supplies amid new US tariffs, said Director General and CEO of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) Ajay Sahai.

Meetings on this issue were held with representatives of the Russian Embassy in India, Sahai said. “We are considering opportunities to increase seafood exports to Russia, and the government is making efforts in this direction,” he said.

Discussions with the Russian side on this issue were “very positive,” he noted. “Given Russia’s trade surplus with India, the Russian Federation supports the expansion of the list of goods supplied from our country,” the expert stressed.

Seafood exports to the Russian market “have challenges,” Sahai continued. “Of course, there are difficulties with the access of Indian 2024-2025 marine products to the Russian market, because strict standards are set in Russia.

But if Indian seafood is already supplied to the United States, then there should be no problems,” he noted.

According to Sahai, frozen shrimps exports to Russia have the growth potential of 10-20%.

India shipped seafood, mainly frozen shrimps, worth INR 63000 Crores or USD 7.4 bln in the 2024-2025 financial year. Russia’s share was just 1.8% of Indian exports.
