A Delhi court on Saturday convicted TV serial producer Suhaib Ilyasi in connection with the death of his wife, Anju.

The argument on the sentence will be held on December 20.

IIyasi who had shot to fame with the TV show ‘India’s Most Wanted’ was arrested in March 2000 after his wife was rushed to a hospital from their east Delhi house with fatal stab wounds.

Later, charges were framed against the serial producer after his in-laws alleged that he had tortured Anju for dowry.

Shoaib Ilyasi was the son of Jameel Ilyasi, President of All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques, Maulana Jameel Ahmed Ilyasi, who recently met with an accident and was undergoing treatment for his injuries died here last night.

Mr Ilyasi, 75, is survived by his wife, three daughters and six sons.

He had recently gone to Mumbai in connection with the work of the welfare of Imams, whose cause he espoused all his life.

While he was coming out of his car in Mumbai, he was hit by a racing motorcycle.

He, however, returned to Delhi after which he was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj.

Day before yesterday, he was shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), where he breathed his last at around 2300 hours yesterday.

Born in north Mewar, Haryana, the Maulana took up the work of welfare of Imams several years ago.

He won a case in the Supreme Court for higher wages for ‘Imams,’ in the Supreme Court in 1992 and was working, thereafter, for its implementation in all states. For this very reason, he had gone to Mumbai.

A firm believer in secularism, Mr Ilyasi was fond of teaching Quran and preaching of Islamic principles to the youth and people from all walks of life.

His burial will take place at 1700 hours at Kasturba Gandhi Mosque in central Delhi, where he used to reside.
