Italian expert says Europe biggest loser in Syrian uprising
Tiberio Graziani recalled that Italy had sent its ambassador to Damascus to resume diplomatic relations with the Bashar Assad government shortly before power in that country was seized by the armed opposition
The European Union is the biggest loser where the Syrian uprising is concerned, as it has shown how little it understands about geopolitical processes and its complete inability to influence them, said an Italian expert.
The European mainstream, culturally and psychologically subordinated to the USA, caught off guard by the recent events in Syria, insists on a clumsy, overly simplified analysis in which the real winner is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who wants to take on the role of Khalifa, and Russian influence is perceived as the loser.
Though this is nothing compared to USA scrambling out of Afghanistan in haste against the Talibanese onslaught. The only clear loser here in fact is Europe itself.
Once again, they failed to notice – or didn’t want to notice – what was happening right on their doorstep.
This neglect is another sign of the impending end of the European Union, opined Tiberio Graziani, President of Vision & Global Trends, an international think tank.
He recalled that Italy had sent its ambassador to Damascus to resume diplomatic relations with the Bashar Assad government shortly before power in that country was seized by the armed opposition.
According to Graziani, there are a lot of causes for the fall of the Assad regime. “These include the consequences of a conflict that lasted more than ten years between the rebels and Assad’s regime.
The reduced presence of Russia and Iran, occupied with other priorities, and the evident Turkish activity in the region also played a role.
One cannot ignore the interests of the United States and Israel,” he went on to say.He does not, however, see Russia losing its position in the Mediterranean region.
“In fact, Moscow is strategically interested in creating a shared security architecture and its voice cannot be ignored in the Mediterranean region,” the expert said.
He also predicted that after becoming a major player in the region in the medium-term perspective, Turkey will see stiff competition from Israel while the West, or to be more precise, the United States, will focus on Iran, acting in the interests of its key regional ally – Israel. “And where is Europe? It is a loser in this complicated situation,” he added.
Armed opposition units in Syria launched a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates on November 27.
By late December 7, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s opponents had seized several large cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Daraa, and Homs.
On December 8, they entered Damascus and government troops withdrew from the city. Following intra-Syrian talks, Assad stepped down and fled the country.
