L&T Forges Ahead In MAKE IN INDIA With Delivery Of 50 Th Vessel To Coast Guard
The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ICGS Veera constructed for the Indian Coast Guard at L&T’s Kattupalli Ship Yard became the 50th vessel constructed so far for MoD. It was commissioned in the august presence of General Bipin Rawat, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC, on 15th April 2019 at Vishakhapatnam.
This was yet another stellar contribution by L&T to Make-in-India and strengthen India’s National maritime security. L&T today completed the commissioning of its 50th defence vessel built under Warship License since receiving first MoD contract in March 2010 to design & build them indigenously.
ICGS Veera was built ahead of contractual schedule and is the 3rd OPV within a span of 11 months and the 11th platform delivered by L&T during the financial year 2018-19, establishing the Yards proven capability to concurrently build multiple warships.
ICGS Veera is not in the series of seven OPVs being built by L&T under a MoD Contract of 2015. The first two vessels ICGS Vikram and ICGS Vijaya were delivered ahead of contractual schedule to ICG in April 2018 and August 2018 respectively. Fourth of the series OPV was launched in Nov 2018 and is presently being readied for sea trials.
L&T has been undertaking indigenous design, manufacturing and Construction of advanced defence platforms and systems across multiple newly established work centres dedicated to the Defence sector. These are national assets and call for gainful utilization of idling capacity. L&T’s is fully committed to government’s endeavors towards self-reliance in defence production by building platforms in house as well as partnering with other yards for indigenously developed platform specific equipment and systems.
L&T is also richly contributing to the upkeep of Indian Naval and Coast Guard fleets by undertaking their repairs/refits and upgrades including emergency repairs and inspection using the 21500 ton class Ship Lift at the Yard. L&T has also been enabled by Govt of India to build and deliver High-Speed Patrol Vessels for a friendly Nation in south-east region as per our Country’s “Look East – Act East“ policy and to empower the Nation to construct latter platforms indigenously.
The 50 platforms delivered till date for Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy include Floating Dock FDN-2 to the Indian Navy, 03 OPVs and 46 Interceptor Boats to the Indian Coast Guard.
