Macron says France intends to beef up its nuclear deterrence forces

Emmanuel Macron noted that “nuclear forces are an element which gives France a special position among other EU countries”

France plans to bolster its nuclear deterrence forces, the nation’s President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday addressing the command of the French armed forces at Mont-de-Marsan air base in the southwestern part of the country.

“We need to boost the national deterrence forces,” the French leader said in his address which was aired by the Elysee Palace on Twitter. He noted that the nation’s “nuclear forces are an element which gives France a special position among other EU countries.” His speech was devoted to the development plans of the French armed forces for 2024-2030.

Macron reiterated that earlier, the Senate “had proposed a project to develop a model for the French army which prioritizes bolstering the armed forces’ fortitude.” “This involves consolidating our model of sovereignty,” the French president said, adding that this is being done against the background of the Ukrainian conflict.

“Therefore, above all, this is about boosting the deterrence forces. Their significance has never been as great as now,” he stressed.

Macron also said that France would “beef up its air defense means, even its anti-drone ones.” “We will also bolster our capabilities in the field of space. France should become a space power,” he asserted.
