More than fifteen police officers were killed in a terrorist attack in Dagestan, Russia.

Several civilians were also killed as a result of the terrorist act, including Father Nikolay, who served for more than forty years in the Orthodox church in Derbent.

The counter-terror operation has been completed in Makhachkala and Derbent where armed terrorists attacked two Russian Orthodox churches, two synagogues and police officers, the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) said. According to the NAC, two terrorists have been neutralized in Derbent and three in Makhachkala. The search for accomplices is underway.

In turn, head of Dagestan Sergey Melikov said that six terrorists had been eliminated; authorities continue to detect foreign-trained sleeping cells.

The counter-terror operation announced on June 23 in Dagestan over attacks on two churches and two synagogues has been lifted. Both civilian and police casualties have been reported.

Magomed Omarov, head of Dagestan’s Sergokalinsky District, has been detained over his sons’ participation in the terror attack in Makhachkala and Derbent. Criminal charges have been filed under Article 205 of Russia’s Criminal Code (terror attack).

The Russian Jewish Congress will take part in restoring the synagogues, the organization’s press service said. The Russian Ministry of Economic Development is recommending that tour companies and hotels allow tourists to reschedule their trips to Dagestan without penalty.

June 24, 25 and 26 have been proclaimed days of mourning in Dagestan. The families of those killed or injured in the terror attacks in Derbent and Makhachkala will receive financial aid, the regional head assured.

Several countries and an international organization have expressed their condolences over Sunday’s attacks on two churches and two synagogues in Dagestan.

The Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Zhang Ming, has sent a message of condolences to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over the death of a priest, police officers and civilians, including children. In the message on the organization’s Telegram channel, Zhang said there is no justification for terrorism, highlighting the need to fight uncompromisingly against what he said were the three forces of evil, namely terrorism, separatism and extremism, was a priority at the SCO.

Israel, too, offered its condolences to the Russian people, Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesman Oren Marmorstein said as he urged efforts to condemn terrorism globally in a post on X.

Meanwhile, there have been no messages from unfriendly countries, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday. “Nor have we heard any words of condemnation against the attacks,” he added.
