Pig’s head found at mosque construction site

Members of a Muslim community near Frankfurt found a severed pig’s head at a construction site where a mosque is being erected, German police said Wednesday.

A spokesman said that Tuesday’s incident was the latest in a series of provocations by residents opposed to the construction of the mosque, which is being overseen by the Turkish-Muslim Council known as Ditib.

Public broadcaster SWR reported that local residents had mounted a series of protests against the planned mosque and that local authorities had held a town hall meeting to assuage their concerns.

Ditib funds some 900 mosques in Germany and has a remit to influence public discourse about religious life among members of the 3-million-strong Turkish diaspora community in the country.

Islamophobia is on the rise in Germany, where the anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) won nearly 13 per cent in a federal election last month.
