Pakistani’s Are Starving To Death – Imran Khan wants to cut Roti, Naan prices

Imran Khan-led Pakistan government has asked provincial administrations to reduce the cost of ‘naan’ and ‘roti’ to pre-June 30 level

People have been blaming ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government for hike in prices of cooking gas, fuel, electricity and food items among other things

Pakistan is facing a serious economic crisis with short supplies of foreign currency reserves and stagnating growth. The price of Roti and Nans have increased significantly. The government has recently convened a cabinet meeting to provide relief to the troubled public and has called for an immediate reduction in the prices of bread and naan.

The decision is expected to bring back the hike in gas rates for roadside tandoors to bring down the price of bread and naan. There was also a protest against the government’s move to raise gas prices in the cash-strapped Imran Khan.

The move seems to be an attempt to pacify disgruntled masses, who have been blaming the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government for hike in prices of cooking gas, fuel, electricity and food items among other things.

Currently, a piece of ‘naan’ costs Rs 12 to Rs 15 and ‘roti’ Rs 10 to Rs 12 in different parts of Pakistan. Prior to increase in gas tariff and rates of wheat flour, the price of ‘naan’ ranged between Rs 8 and Rs 10 and ‘roti’ Rs 7 and Rs 8.

According to ECC’s decision, a detailed survey of tandoors across the country will be carried out to ensure that the benefit of revision in gas tariff is applicable to standalone tandoors or roadside restaurants catering to the poor. No undue benefit will be passed on to the tandoors in hotels or larger restaurants, which are to be treated as commercial gas connections.

The ECC also reviewed a report on the price of wheat. According to the report, the price has been reduced by Rs 50-60 per 40kg after a ban on its export.

After the Cabinet meeting, Information Minister Firdaus Ashiq Awan said: “The Prime Minister has taken a tough stand on the rising prices of naan and roti. “Pakistan is currently facing a low supply of foreign exchange reserves and a severe economic crisis,” he said, adding that steps are being taken to bring Naan and Roti at an old price. A few days ago, the IMF has agreed to provide a $6 billion loan to Pakistan in three years. Ever since Imran took over pak, he has suddenly faced new challenges.
