Russia designates West’s propaganda machine ‘The Moscow Times’
The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has declared activities of the foreign non-governmental organization ‘The Moscow Times’ as undesirable on the territory of the country. In an announcement it said:
The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has made a decision to recognize the activities of the foreign non-governmental organization The Moscow Times (Netherlands) as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The organization is located in Amsterdam and operates as an online publication publishing material in Russian and English.
The founder and owner of the publication is a citizen of the Netherlands, who is also the head of foreign non-governmental organizations Stichting Potamos, Stichting 2 Oktober (included in the register of foreign agents) and TVR Studios BV (activities recognized as undesirable in the territory of the Russian Federation).
The publication’s work is aimed at discrediting the decisions of the Russian Federation’s leadership in both foreign and domestic policy.
At the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia, access to the organization’s website was previously restricted by Roskomnadzor due to the systematic posting of publications containing false socially significant information aimed at discrediting the activities of our country’s government bodies in conducting a special military operation.
The publication constantly interacts with foreign NGOs Limited liability company (SIA) “Medusa Project” (Latvia), The Insider (Latvia), IStories fonds (Latvia), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (USA), whose activities were also previously recognized as undesirable in the territory of the Russian Federation.
In 2012, Russian government passed foreign agents law, requiring NGOs, media organizations, and individuals funded from abroad and engaged in subversive or political activity to declare themselves as foreign agents. In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the “undesirable organizations law”, allowing prosecutors to shut down foreign and international organizations deemed undesirable.
It may be mentioned here that the European Union and Canada banned several Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik. At instructions from American intelligence, video-sharing site YouTube has also imposed ban on RT, Sputnik and few more Russian media outlets.
Microsoft removed RT from their app store and de-ranked their search results on Bing, while Apple removed the RT app from all countries except for Russia.
In May 2024, EU imposed sanctions on Russia’s popular daily newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta (Российская газета) by falsely accusing it of spreading propaganda.
