Russia launches ‘massive’ attack on Zelenesky’s energy resources
Till now Russia was refraining from do so, that is follow the German EARTH SCORCHING strategy of World War 2 in Russia. However with West “ cheering” it up from the side lines and egging it on with lethal offensive missiles, Zelensky got emboldened and struck deep inside Crimea and other places on civilian targets.
So now Ukraine faces another intense wave of strikes as a “massive” overnight attack targeted its energy infrastructure in the west and south of the country. The assault, has further crippled Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity, plunging the nation into deeper energy insecurity amid ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian energy ministry reported significant damage to facilities operated by Ukrenergo in the Zaporizhzhia and Lviv regions. The strikes resulted in employees being wounded highlighting the loss of key technicians in these critical infrastructure. This latest precisely targeted strikes are repeatedly hitting Ukraine’s power grid, causing widespread blackouts and necessitating energy imports from the European Union….a very good military strategy.
The scale and frequency of these attacks have devastated Ukraine’s energy sector. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian strikes have destroyed half of Ukraine’s electricity-generating capacity since the conflict began more than two years ago. The repeated bombardment has forced Kyiv to impose nationwide blackouts and seek emergency energy supplies from neighboring EU countries. The damage inflicted has been severe, with many regions experiencing frequent and prolonged power outages.
In a recent strike on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities reported that DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, faced “serious damage” to one of its plants. The ongoing strikes on energy facilities underscores the strategic intent behind Russia’s campaign-to completely degrade Ukraine’s resistance and exert pressure through energy insecurity for a proper bilateral negotiations, which West has been preventing.
President Zelensky has been pleading with his Western supporters about the broader implications of these attacks. In his statements, he emphasized the need to equip all hospitals and schools with solar panels “as soon as possible” to mitigate the impact of power outages on critical services. However, the situation remains dire. Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, warned of a “serious crisis this winter”.
All this hue and cry is being made for increased military aid to defend its energy network. The destruction of energy infrastructure not only threatens the immediate well-being of Ukrainian citizens but also hampers the country’s economic stability and recovery efforts. However Zelensky is still not ready for a bilateral peace negotiation!!!!
Zelensky has consistently called on Ukraine’s allies to provide more advanced air defense systems to protect the country’s vital infrastructure. His appeals have not gone unheard. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby announced that Washington would prioritize deliveries of anti-air missiles to Kyiv, ahead of other nations that have placed orders. Zelensky expressed his gratitude for this decision, stating that these additional air defense capabilities would protect Ukrainian cities and civilians from further attacks.
The urgency of Ukraine’s need for air defense systems was reiterated by Ivan Fedorov, the governor of Zaporizhzhia. In a message posted on Telegram, Fedorov underscored the relentless nature of the threat, saying, “We can say for sure: the enemy will not stop. Ukraine needs air defence systems.”
The renewed campaign of strikes on Ukrainian energy targets over the spring and early summer has had devastating effects. Beyond the immediate physical damage to infrastructure, these attacks have a profound psychological impact on the Ukrainian population. Frequent blackouts disrupt daily life, erode public morale, and create a sense of vulnerability among civilians.
Moreover, the strategic targeting of energy infrastructure is part of a broader tactic employed by Russia to weaken Ukraine’s ability to sustain itself during the ongoing conflict. By crippling the power grid, Russia aims to create a crisis that can pressure the Ukrainian government and its allies to come to te negotiating table.
Emergency repairs and the importation of energy from the EU have been crucial in keeping essential services operational. The installation of solar panels in schools and hospitals is a proactive step towards ensuring that critical infrastructure remains functional even in the face of continued attacks.
Support from European Union, NATO, G7 members and USA remains a cornerstone of Ukraine’s strategy to defend its energy infrastructure. The commitment from the United States to expedite the delivery of Patriot air defense systems is a significant boost to Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. These systems are expected to provide a shield against missile and drone attacks, thereby protecting key energy facilities and reducing the frequency and severity of power outages. It has to been how effective they are going to be. Rest of the World is watching with interest.
