Sajith promises swift solution to issue of Indians poaching in SL waters

SJB Presidential candidate of Sajith Premadasa, in Mannar recently, pledged to resolve the longstanding issue of Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters through diplomatic channels if his party assumes power at the 21 September election.

Acknowledging the significant impact the poaching is having on the livelihoods of local fishermen, Premadasa promised a swift, permanent, and diplomatic solution to protect the interests of Sri Lanka’s fishing communities.

Speaking at a public rally in Mannar, Premadasa also addressed the needs of the agricultural sector. He announced that a new programme will be introduced to ease the burdens faced by farmers. From January, paddy farmers will be guaranteed a fixed price for their harvest, and fertiliser will be made available at a subsidised rate of 5,000 rupees for a 50 kilo bag.

Premadasa highlighted plans to provide a fuel subsidy to farmers, accessible through a QR code system, specifically to support their agricultural needs. He further declared that under his government, all agricultural loans taken out by farmers would be written off.

“Cultivation loans will definitely be waived under our administration,” he affirmed.

Premadasa also outlined broader development plans for the nation, particularly for the war-affected northern and eastern regions. He proposed an international summit to rally support for these areas and vowed to improve transportation links with India and other districts. By enhancing Mannar’s connectivity, he aims to spur growth in tourism and establish manufacturing industries in the district.
