UN Security Council condemns terrorist attack in Iran
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the cowardly terrorist attack in the city of Kerman, the Islamic Republic of Iran on 3 January, the UN Security Council said
The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in the Iranian city of Kerman and emphasized the need to hold the culprits accountable, the UN Security Council said in a statement published on its website.
“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the cowardly terrorist attack in the city of Kerman, the Islamic Republic of Iran on 3 January,” the statement said.
“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” it said. “The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.”
The UN Security Council also urged all the UN member countries to cooperate with Tehran, in order to bring the perpetrators to justice, and offered condolences to the families of the victims and to the Iranian government.
On January 3, twin blasts occurred in the Iranian city of Kerman during a ceremony commemorating an anniversary of General Qasem Soleimani’s death. The Tasnim news agency reported that the first explosion took place 700 meters from Soleimani’s tomb, and the second was at a distance of about one kilometre. The news agency reported citing sources that the explosive devices were detonated remotely. Iran’s Health and Medical Education Minister Bahram Einollahi said that 95 people were killed and 211 more injured. The deputy governor of Kerman province labeled the incident as a terrorist attack. The Iranian government declared a day of national mourning on January 4.
General Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (an elite unit of the Iranian military), was killed in a US airstrike near Baghdad Airport on January 3, 2020.
