UNGA president highlights need to develop common position on UNSC reform

According to him, it will be very important to make sure that the P5 can also work as a representative among the 193 member states.

The United Nations General Assembly has much to do to develop a common position on the UN Security Council’s reform, President of the 77th UN General Assembly Csaba Korosi told reporters on Thursday.

“It is very important that we should have a consultative process with the P5 but let me dissolve the misperception that it is only the position of the P5 that makes the negotiations difficult,” he said.

“I think there is a huge task ahead of the General Assembly now, this year, and we’ll see how long [it takes] to iron out an acceptable workable compromise among the 193 members. We have never reached that point,” Korosi added.

According to him, it will be very important to make sure that the P5 can also work as a representative among the 193 member states. “But it will be the second stage when a united consolidating position of the General Assembly will be taken to the Security Council for their approval,” he noted.

Korosi highlighted the need to avoid an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine “and among other manifestations of the very complex and interlinked crisis that we have in the world.” The UNGA president said that developments in Ukraine “renewed our attention to the UN Security Council reform.”.
