UNSC resolution granting full UN membership to Palestine got vetoed by Biden

By doing it, the United States is trying to break the will of the Palestinian people and bring them to Israel’s heel, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

The United States exercised its veto right to block a UN Security Council resolution to grant full UN membership to Palestine, a correspondent reported.

A total of 12 countries, including Russia and China, voted in favour of the document, while two countries – Switzerland and the United Kingdom – abstained. The United States was the only country that voted against the proposed resolution.

By blocking the UN Security Council resolution granting full UN membership to Palestine, the United States is trying to break the will of the Palestinian people and bring them to Israel’s heel, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya told the UN Security Council.

“The United States is ready to turn a blind eye to Israel’s crimes against Gaza civilians for as long as possible, to ignore the <…> illegal settlement activities in the West Bank. The goal is to break the will of the Palestinian people, to compel them to obey unconditionally to the occupying power <…> and maybe even to expel them completely from their homeland,” Nebenzya said after the vote.

The results of the vote show that the United States is in practically total isolation on the issue, Nebenzya considers.

“The results of the vote, when Washington found itself in practically total isolation, speak for themselves,” he said.

Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky slammed ‘pathetic’ US explanations of why it vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to grant full UN membership to Palestine.

“A historic moment: the UN Security Council voted on UN membership for Palestine. 12 were in favour, two abstained (the United Kingdom and Switzerland). One permanent member of the UN Security Council was against: the United States exercised its veto right.

They explained incoherently that it is not yet the time and that Israel should normalize its relations with Arab neighbours first. This looked pathetic,” he said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas named the veto of the United States immoral. According to him, it encourages the Israeli government to continue its war on the people of Palestine.

“The US veto at the UN Security Council is unfair, immoral and runs counter to the will of the international community,” Abbas was quoted as saying by the Al-Youm as-Sabia news portal. “The US policy encourages Israel to continue its war of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”.
