China’s President Xi Jinping supervised the preparations of candidates for elections to the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee and established selection criteria, the Xinhua news agency reported.
“Secretary General Xi Jinping personally planned the [selection] commission’s formation, personally guided and checked its activities and provided the right direction to it in terms of preparations of candidates for the 20th Congress,” the report reads. According to Xinhua, the work on selecting candidates for senior positions in the party began last July.
The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post newspaper, in turn, pointed out that it was the first time that China’s government media outlet had confirmed the president’s involvement in the selection of candidates for the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee. According to the paper, the candidates’ ability to confront Western countries amid sanctions pressure was one of the key criteria for Xi Jinping.
